After spending the weekend with Norm and Karen, I took a breath and headed out on my own. I had Sunday afternoon to kill before catching the overnight bus to Chiang Mai, so I thought I would see a few more sights in Bangkok.

I took the Skytrain to Saphan Taksin, a terminal for the train, and a main hub for the river ferry. The Chao Phra River is an ancient route of transport, from which the network of canals (khlongs) were built. The canals have mostly fallen into disuse due to modern things like streets and plumbing blocking the way. The river is still widely used, however, and has many piers (aka transit stops) along its shores, in amongst the wats and hotels. My little boat trip lasted about twenty minutes, but if I had had more time, there are many up-river stops mid-sized channels which were open for exploration.
